How to Play
- Picking Leader: When you first fire up the game, you will have to pick your first monster. This character will be your “leader” for the remainder of the game. There shouldn’t be much of a problem here—just pick whatever color or element picks your fancy. The game won’t handicap you at this point based on your choice.
- Gameplay: In Puzzle and Dragons, the main focus of the game will be centered on matching three of the game gems. Right above the gems you will see your monster team. In this early battle, I have a fire monster (my leader), water monster and then an earth monster. The gems on the playing field correspond to each of the elements. You have to match three of a gem color, and more importantly, three of the same color of a monster that you have on your attacking team.
- Elements and Gems: There are two other elements outside of the base fire, water, and earth—there is darkness and light (with corresponding purple and yellow gems on the gem field). There is one other variable that you need to be aware of—the pink hearts. While all of the other gems allow you to attack, the pink hearts is for you to gain health. This is most useful if you don’t have a current viable match-three option and your enemies are about to attack. You can match the hearts and gain some health points while you wait for some new gems to enter the gem field and allow you to attack your foes.
- Moving Gems: You can move gems horizontally or vertically, right to left or up and down as many tiles as you want, however you can only move them along these planes—diagonal movement is not allowed.
- Enemies and Focused Attacks: In the above screenshot, you can see that you’ll face more than one enemy at once. In this scenario, you will want to focus your attacks on the fighter located on your left. The “in X” (where X is the amount of gem movements) indicator is when they are going to attack. The enemy on the left is going to attack in only three movements. You can focus your attacks by simply tapping the creature that you want your attacks to target.
- Combos: Combo attacks are when you match one set of gems and then that sets off a chain with other matches. The main benefit of these is that it increases the strength of your attack and attacks multiple enemies at once. With most combos, you’ll get them unintentionally until you really look and understand the chain that sets them off. For example, by dropping the blue gem in row 4, column 4 down to row 5, this will get a blue match, but also get a fire combo chain.
- Post-Fight: After you succeed in your fight, you’ll receive some experience that can spent upgrading your monster’s skills, and you also will get some new monsters to help build up your fighting team. Most of the monsters that you receive will be “common” monsters that you will use to fuse with your current monsters to make them tougher.
- Edit Team: Here is where you can select your team. You have your leader, and then you have four “team members”. You will want to have a nice mix of elements on your team as to not box yourself in hoping for one single gem type.
- Power-Up Fusion: Power-up fusion is the main way to make your monsters more powerful. You’ll want to select monsters of similar elements (fire with fire, etc) to get the most out of the power-up. Fusing your monsters together, specifically the common ones with some of the more elite monsters will make them even more powerful in combat.
- Helpers: Before you enter a dungeon to take on enemies, you have the option to select a helper on your quest to clear the area. These are a must to select. You’ll get “pal points” for selecting them—just a currency that accrues that you can spend on goodies once you receive 1000 points (you get five for each time you select, and you automatically have your monsters at other players disposal, so you’ll get some organically when you are not playing). More importantly, there are times where these helpers can get you out of a tight spot by providing you an element you might not have on your team, or just a much more powerful monster than what you currently have on your team.
- Magic Stone Shop: Magic stones are the premium currency of Puzzle and Dragons, and can be purchased by selected the “shop” button. From there, just select the “Magic Stone Shop” and you have a number of different options for how many you would like to purchase. They can be used in the “machine” icon, where you can purchase rare eggs that have more powerful monsters.
- Social: In the friends tab you can select your friend list, search for players and send mail within the games to different players. Surprisingly, there is no Facebook or Twitter integration to invite your friends to play with you, so you will have to do that coordination outside of the game’s ecosystem. However, the game does a good job through the “helper” system to build up your friends by asking each of your helpers to become your friends in the game.
Congratulations!
